Having the right electric fence supplies is crucial when building an electric wire fence. All over the internet electric fence suppliers are clamoring for your business, so if you’re planning to build an electrical fence…have your ducks in a row and it will make it easier when you go to buy electric fence supplies.

Also, depending on the size of fence you are building you have many local retailers that might be in your area such as Petsmart and Lowes.  These two locations have all kinds of electric fence supplies that you might be looking for.  But, if you have a much bigger project in mind then online or maybe a local farm and home supply might have the supplies you need. Just recently I had to build a fence for a friend of mine and wound up purchasing over 80% of the items online. We just could not find what I was looking for locally.  For example my friend wanted a Gallagher electric fence, but being they are overseas we had it shipped directly to him. Saved us both a lot of time not having to go out and shop all over for the electric fence supplies.  We did buy all of the electric fence insulators from the local farm and home supply and the gentlemen was very knowledgeable about building these electrical fences.  That type of insight is something you just won’t get buying online, but nevertheless we saved a bunch of money and he was happy with the way it turned out.

Here is a list of the electric fence supplies that we need to complete is electric fence that covered over 2 square acres:

  • 400 yards of 14 gauge wire
  • 80 electric fence insulators
  • 23 galvanized post (1.5” diameter)
  • A Gallagher fence charger (Model #M300)
  • A digital electric fence tester (for maintenance)

Now this is not a set list of electric fence supplies.  Your need will be determined on what your trying to keep secured.  I can tell you that we spent a third of what we would have spent if we went to a conventional barb wire fence.  The only drawback of an electrical fence is the stability of the fence.  The fence is only as good as the voltage being sent down the lines.  I would recommend sticking to only name brand chargers and testers.  Reliability is a big factor in a sound electrical fence and taking you your time to build it correctly will save you time and money down the road.  With that being said, a majority of your preparation will be to make sure you have the right electric fence supplies to do the job correctly.
